A mum who served up a hearty homemade meal for her family for dinner left them stunned.
Yvonne Cadden, from Livingston in Scotland, whipped up the age-old traditional Scottish dish, ‘haggis, neeps and tatties’, for her husband and her two teen sons.
For those who don’t know what haggis is, it’s made up of minced heart, liver, and lungs and bulked out with oatmeal, onions, suet, seasoning, and spices – and is usually served alongside mash – tatties – and mashed turnip, known as ‘neeps’ to celebrate Burns Night on January 25.
But instead, the 48-year-old’s ‘dinner’ was actually an elaborate illusion cake.
Instead of tucking into the homemade dish they expected, they were surprised to be chowing down on chocolate and vanilla sponge with buttercream filling.
The cake took the mum-of-four two days to make and she even managed to fool two of her kids Callum, 15 and Shay, 17, into thinking it was the real deal.
Yvonne said: “It took one day to bake and I did the decorating the next day.
“The haggis is chocolate cake, the tatties and turnip are vanilla and the gravy is chocolate icing.
“Me and my husband had the mashed potato cake with a cuppa, it was weird eating what looks like mashed potatoes thinking savoury eating sweet.
“My son Callum and loves chocolate cake and Oreos so he was happy with the haggis.
“When I took it out the fridge I said to my other son Shay, ‘haggis and tatties for dinner?’ He went to take the plate before realising what it was. It was so funny.
“I took a picture and had lots of people asking for me to cut it to prove it was real.”
The self-taught baker first took up the hobby during lockdown to help her cope with boredom and keep her busy.
But she found she had a real flair for cake decorating and soon began making elaborate designs.
She also made a pumpkin cake at Halloween for her four grandchildren and has also made some cakes for charity, including a hamburger cake and washing up sponges cake and has set up a Facebook page for amateur bakers.
She added: “I just taught myself in lockdown having lung disease makes me limited what I can do.
“When I started getting better I baked for donations to the Cash for Kids charity that were helping children and families affected by Covid-19.
“I’ve done a couple for people stuck in quarantine and lady recovering from Covid.
“The grandkids got the pumpkin and I loved the green and yellow sponges, they were great with a cuppa, lemon flavoured suds, strange but real.
“I started a new Facebook group ago to allow other new bakers to show theirs. It’s called Home Cooked Cakes and Oven Bakes recipes and ideas.”
